"I've talked to lots of people from other parts of the country, and they've told me they like this legislation and support it because they have the same problems going on in their area," he said.

"There was a challenge brought forth by the Detroit Police Officers Union that challenged our ability to do so (offer restricted duty), let's put it that way," [James Tate] said. "The Detroit Police Officers Union filed a brief challenging our ability to provide light duty to pregnant officers."

If [Coleman A Young II]'s bill becomes law, the police department wouldn't be able to make an officer take mandatory unpaid leave if she could work light duty.

The Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, established in 1976, prohibits discriminatory practices and policies based on religion, race, color, national origin, sex, height, weight, familial status or marital status.
