Summary


My heart is deeply saddened. By now I am sure everyone has heard about the two children, Deamonte Driver and Alexander Callender, who died as a result of delayed or denied dental treatment. -In both instances the bacteria from the dental infection (cavity) was left untreated. It (infection) traveled through the tooth into the surrounding bone. Once it leaves the tooth and travels into the jaw bone the infection is then carried throughout the body. The net result is bacteria in the bloodstream also known as sepsis.

Former surgeon general David Satcher called the untreated oral disease the "silent epidemic" and another, C. Everett Koop, said "you aren't healthy if you don't have good oral health." Society can be blamed for not providing basic healthcare for all of its citizens, especially the least fortunate of these.
