The Donny Hathaway Story

Summary


He was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in 1965. Attending Howard for three years, he performed with the Ric Powell Trio Jazz Trio. Because of his great talent, there were so many job offers he left Howard in 1967 without a degree. He did the arrangements for the Unifics' 1968 hits "Court of Love" and "The Beginning of My End."

After signing with Atco Records, his first single was "The Ghetto, Pt. 1," and his introductory album was "Everything Is Everything (1970), which inspired me to get a pair of "sky blue" platform shoes that a wore out at a local house party. He continued becoming a major force by recording a duets album with a former Howard University classmate, Roberta Flack. It became a best seller. Ralph MacDonald wrote "Where Is The Love?" for them. The hits just keep coming. In addition, [Donny Edward Hathaway] wrote songs recorded by the Whispers, [Aretha Franklin], the Temptations, the Four Tops, Chicago and others. He composed and conduced the soundtrack of the movie "Come Back Charleston Blue" the TV show "Maude."
