"The Coleman A. Young Foundation wants to encourage education and encourage high achievement," says Executive Director Dr. Claudette Smith. "We know that in order to succeed in these times, our young people need a good education and the required skills to compete in this highly competitive, highly technical environment."

"We look for young people who show promise," Dr. Smith said. "It's not just the money provided by the scholarship, but the additional things we provide including mentoring and close academic monitoring.

"I would also call Detroit the most resilient city in America, to which end I kind of like to think that it takes after its mayor of the past 20 years. The Coleman A. Young Foundation [...] his final breath there was no denying that Coleman Alexander Young, who became our city's first Black mayor in 1973, was all about Detroit, which he proudly led for a record 20 years.
