Solid Black Support: Don't Count On It

It would benefit us and, indirectly, the whole country if we were more of "like thought"' with regard to supporting African American achievers. That is, with less inclination to say and even do things to bring other Black people down. There is truth is the old "crabs in the barrel" analogy with regard to "us."

Just about everybody knows who Lenny Kravitz, the Black rock superstar, is, but few Black people make an effort to develop even a surface appreciation for what he does. It irritates Kravitz when "the brothers" or "the sisters" say he plays "White music." To Kravitz's way of think, since rock evolved from R&B, it, too, is really "Black" music.

There was a time when the people running record companies were often producers, writers or whatever, such as Motown's Berry Gordy and Atlantic's Ahmet Ertegun. Now they are usually "suits" who worship at the throne of profits at all costs. (That's why so much crude, destructive rap gets thrown at us. Those who keep it clean, positive and/or political do not generally land major recording contracts.)

It's not that African Americans should be expected to be monolithic. We do not all think alike. Our backgrounds greatly vary. We have differing priorities. And certainly being "controlled" is out of the question, especially given our unique and often painful past
