Summary
When you purchase a vehicle, cable TV or even gasoline, you expect to get what you pay for. Perhaps more than thirty years ago this was true, but more recently, many Michiganders have learned the hard way that they don't have much protection from deceptive and unscrupulous businesses in this state. In 1976, the Michigan Consumer Protection Act was one of the nation's most powerful consumer protection laws. It was a bipartisan agreement that banned 29 unfair, deceptive or unconscionable business practices in the sale of goods and services and empowered the state Attorney General to go to court to stop such conduct.
It's time for the Legislature to take action. It's time to rewrite this law to put people first and keep Michigan businesses competing fairly. Consumer protection acts are designed to fill in the gaps left by other laws and regulations, but in its current state, Michigan's law is serving dishonest businesses more than our citizens.
