Pershing, City High Finish As Runners-Up in Boys' Basketball State Finals

Summary

"They came out hungry and hit shots and we did not," Pershing Coach A.W. Canada said. "In the second halt we gave some effort, but we could never get out of that hole."

Pershing's last appearance in the Finals was a loss to Lansing Waverly in 2001. The Doughboys last won a boys' basketball state title in 1993, going back-to-back under the late Johnny Goston. There was added pressure on Pershing this year because no PSL team had won a Class A title since Central and Antonio Gates in 1998.

"Of course it hurts to lose," [Shaheed Saleem] said, "but we took this team as far as it could go. I only had two kids that ever played varsity basketball on this team. Unfortunately, we've had the turnover bug all year, but our defense always brought us through . . . not today, though."

EAST LANSING - This year's Michigan High School Sports Athletic Association (MHSAA) Boys' Basketball Tournament at the Breslin Center on the campus of Michigan State University saw two Detroit Public School League (PSL) teams get to the pinnacle of high school basketball.
