"At MGM Grand, we pride ourselves on our customer service, especially our security, which may come as a surprise to some people," she said. "Ninety-nine percent of the time, security officers are the first people our guests see. We're there to welcome you and answer any questions you may have. Our customer service is very important. I tell my officers, 'If you don't know the answers, find someone who does!'"

"I've enjoyed every moment I've been here," she said. "With the career opportunities I have here and the chance to meet so many people and catch up with some old friends, it's been great for me."

When Pennywell received the letter, she was working at a floating Harrah's casino in Shreveport, La., so she had no trouble landing a job as a security officer at the newly opened MGM Grand Detroit Casino in May 1999.
