Old School Meets New School; Golightly Conference Equips Young Men for Success

Summary

The success of a young man can be determined by the examples that are set for him. The seminar, "Preparing Young Men for Success," was held March 2 at Golightly Career and Technical Center. The purpose of this seminar is self explanatory, in that it was to teach the young men of Golightly how to dress and behave in an interview and within a place of business. It is important to prepare teens today for tomorrow's success. It was just nice to see that so many people were interested in our future.

The students were instructed on the proper attire for interviewing by the always-dapper [Marvin Ware], program manager at Golightly. Ware told the students that they were eliminating themselves from consideration for employment if they were not properly dressed when meeting prospective employers. He explained that dress slacks, dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes are the bare minimum, and that earrings were unacceptable during an interview. As Ware stressed, even the top student will have difficulty obtaining good employment if they do not conform to acceptable attire standards.

[James Holley], compact coordinator at Finney High School, presented strategies to resolve and avoid conflict in both the student's personal lives and at the workplace. He let the young men know that regardless of the circumstances that confronted them, they are ultimately responsible for their own actions. Along those same lines, Earl Smith, special-populations counselor at Golightly, provided the students with a systematic approach to making wise, informed decisions. Dwight Smith, program manager at Golightly, and [Ron Brown], consultant, spoke to the young men on the importance of maintaining good personal hygiene. The students were told that not being clean and well groomed would handicap them both in the employment process and on job. They also stressed the need for well-groomed hair and hands.
