1. Umoja (OO-MO-JAH) - Unity stresses the importance of togetherness for the family and the community, which is reflected in the African saying, "I am We," or "I am because We are."

Detroit City Council member Alberta Tinsley-Talabi will lead a Kwanzaa rite of passage under the theme "A Leader Who Serves" in conjunction with the Mack Alive project on Dec. 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Youthville, 7375 Woodward.

Truth Bookstore, located in the Northland Mall will also hosts a Kwanzaa ceremony on Dec. 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Bookstore proprietors are inviting new and old customers to attend the function, noting that Kwanzaa is a spiritual and festive celebration that helps Blacks to focus on their spiritual and social needs.

Founded by noted Black scholar and activist Maulana Karenga after the 1965 Los Angeles' Watts Riots to remind African-Americans of the need for a cultural solace and identity, Kwanzaa has since been a leading holiday for Blacks in the Diaspora.
