Free Kidney Disease Screenings at Sinai-Grace Hospital

Summary

Even a small amount of protein in the urine can indicate the early stages of kidney disease. At Stage One, kidneys are damaged but still fully functional. Kidney function continuously decreases through Stages Two, Three and Four. By Stage Five, there is total kidney failure, and the only treatment options are dialysis and transplant.

High blood pressure and diabetes are the leading causes of chronic kidney disease, accounting for 70-80 percent of cases. Other causes are use of illegal drugs and abuse of pain medications. Viral illnesses such as Hepatitis C, and HIV can also lead to kidney disease. All of these conditions lead to scarring of the kidney filters, which reduces and eventually prevents the kidneys from performing their important functions.
