Summary


[Khalid Pitts] has seen, from living in the nation's capital, how even the smallest of bills can affect millions of people. He grew up in a lower middle class neighborhood in northwest Detroit, where people often had more than one job to make ends meet. From his current vantage point in D.C., Pitts asks himself how he can make something of his life that can help others.

Pitts was also with the Washington, D.C.-based Coalition to Stop Gun Violence for five years. He left in December 2003 to help former U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt in his campaign for president. Pitts ran the state of Virginia for Gephardt. He subsequently went to work for the Service Employees Union after Gephardt dropped out of the race.

"Here in Washington, D.C., decisions are made that affect hundreds of millions of lives," Pitts said. "If you sit on the sidelines, history is going to pass you by. If you want to change how things happen, you have to be a part of the system of change. You don't have to be in D.C. or in politics, but you have to get involved."
