Among those in attendance to salute Dr. [Claud Young] were Governor Jennifer Granholm, Senator Debbie Stabenow and Congressman John Conyers. The master of ceremonies was Bishop Charles Ellis III, pastor of Greater Grace Temple, and the mistress of ceremonies was Channel 7 news anchor Diana Lewis. The "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, a longtime close friend of the Young family, was honorary chairperson of the gala.

On Sunday, Jan. 17, the Michigan Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) hosted a tribute honoring its founder, Dr. Claud Young, at the Detroit Renaissance Marriott A noted physician, civil rights leader, philanthropist and activist for social causes across the globe, Dr. Young founded the Michigan SCtC in 1970. Since its creation, the organization has been dedicated to promoting social, economic and political justice.
