Summary


After the Supreme Court ruled in 2003 that, in order to promote diversity, colleges and universities could consider an applicant's race when making admissions decisions but could not use rigid formulas to do so, [Jennifer Gratz] contacted Ward Connerly.

Connerly, a Black businessman from California and a vocal opponent of affirmative action, backed a proposal in his state that ended affirmative action policies altogether. Gratz encouraged Connerly that a similar measure must be taken in Michigan, and thus the MCRI was spawned.

Organizers of the MCRI would have us believe that Proposal 2 is actually in support of civil rights. Instead, the proposal is the exact opposite. If passed, Proposal 2 would end programs that help women achieve wages equal to men for equal work, eliminate educational scholarships and financial aid for women and minorities, end programs that ensure fair housing and lending programs for women and minorities, and prevent schools from encouraging diversity by taking an applicant's race into account during the admissions process.
