Indeed, any impartial appraisal of Detroit's current services and offerings, will conclude that Michigan's largest city is far superior today than it was before [Kwame M. Kilpatrick] assumed the mantle of leadership as its 60th mayor.

While that's still too many killings, the number reflects, on average, 60 fewer homicides each year under Kilpatrick's stewardship.

Restaurants - ranging from the spice of Vicente's to the chic of Mosaic to the elegance of Seldom Blues - have opened on Kilpatrick's watch and offer diversity to Southeast Michigan's collective palate.

Michigan's economy is still reeling from volatility in the domestic auto industry; and President Bush, it can be argued, continues to squander federal money for cities like Detroit in his dubious war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nearly seven summers have passed since Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick exhorted Detroiters to "rise up" and transform the city into a sterling example of municipal harmony.

And Detroit has risen.
