"It was efficiently managed and the trial was quick date," [Ron Glotta] said. "I never could really figure out the rationale for dismantling it. My opinion is that they didn't want jury selection to come from Detroit."

"Recorder's Court needs to be restored in order to address the serious disparities that exist in the new system that are negatively impacting many Detroiters' lives," [Shannelle Jackson] said. "It is a basic American right to have a jury of one's peers, including citizens of the same race, and the Detroit Recorder's Court honored that right. That system served us well for more than 150 years and then it was taken away from us."

Judge Deborah Thomas of Wayne County, who has crusaded for a jury of one's peers in the county's court system, was surprised to hear of Jackson's legislation.

Many observers believe that Recorder's Court was dismantled in response to the conviction of White Detroit police officers Walter Budzyn and Larry Nevers for the murder of Malice Green, an African American.
