Summary

[Jawole Willa Jo Zollar] founded Urban Bush Women in 1984 after earning a B.A. in dance from the University of Missouri and an M.F.A. in dance from Florida State University. In 2002, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Columbia College in Chicago. She received a 2006 New York Dance and Performance Award (a BESSIE) for her work as choreographer and creator of "Walking with Pearl... Southern Diaries," a dance inspired by African American choreographer, educator and social activist Pearl Primus. In addition to repertory for UBW, Zollar has created works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Arizona, Philadanco and others. She is the Nancy Smith Fichter tenured professor in the Dance department of Florida State University.

The all-female Urban Bush Women weaves contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of African-Americans and the African Diaspora, exploring the transformation of struggle and suffering into the bittersweet joy of survival.
