"We're in direct competition with the drug dealers on the street, so our focus and ideology are to help these high-risk teens understand they have options other than dealing drugs," [Paula Sadler] said. "The Spot provides a safe place for teens to congregate, socialize, develop leadership skills and mature into productive adults."

"When the Welfare to Work program began, single mothers were required to attend training classes at various worksites and weren't home when their children left school," [Edgar L. Vann Jr.] said. 'These children would have nowhere to go and consequently they congregated at their schools. which didn't have after-school programs. So the police, by law, would literally have to transport all of these children to the 13th Precinct in buses or paddy wagons."

"We can't claim that we've been 100 percent successful, but we can say that we've seen a tremendous amount of success," he continued. "We stress connecting children with their parents and all of our programs are geared toward tying the home to the child and the child to the home.
