Summary
Although there is no way to prevent breast cancer, there are things all women can do that might reduce their risk and help increase the odds that if cancer does occur, it is found at an early, more treatable stage. According to the American Cancer Society, women can lower their risk of breast cancer by changing risk factors that are under their control. Limiting alcohol use, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight decreases risk of getting breast cancer. Women who choose to breast-feed their babies for at least a few months may also reduce their risk.
* Get a clinical breast exam: Women in their twenties and thirties should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a regular exam by a health expert, at least every three years.
