"When we look at the economic state of the African American community, it's fair to say when the administration talks about turning the corner as a nation, African Americans are still in search of that corner," [Alexis Herman] said.

[Ed Montgomery] said the last your years have seen remarkable reversals in the overall fortune of African Americans. He said the unemployment rate for African Americans fell from 14 percent to 7 percent during the [Clinton] administration. It has moved up to 10.9 percent during [Bush]'s tenure.

"The Bush administration's policies clearly have not brought the kind of progress to the African American community that we saw, and, in fact, the National Urban League has said this recovery has been the worst for African Americans in the last 25 years," he said.
