African Americans Should Know What Martin Luther King Day Stands For

Summary


When it came time for the pair of African American employees to respond to a call they expressed how disappointed they were in their supervisor for asking them to respond to a call "on Martin Luther King Day, of all days." Resisting being dispatched, the two workers were eventually successful in "guilting" their employer into selecting a pair of non-African-American employees to respond to the call. Request after request came in but the African-American workers were immune from responding because it was, "after all, Martin Luther King Day."

The theme of this year's celebration was, "The Simple Art of Living Together," inspired by Dr. King's statement, "We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not yet learned the simple art of living together like brothers."

It was an honor and pleasure to be so enlightened and inspired by [Henry Cisneros]' words as he paid homage to Dr. King. No amount of extra rest can refuel us in that same way. So next year when "Saturday Night Live" presents another critical satire about the significance of the holiday, let's not let that sketch bear relevance to us.
