African Americans at Greater Risk for Diabetes, Heart Disease

Summary


African Americans are almost twice as likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic Whites. With this higher risk also comes an increased risk for the #1 cause of early death among people with diabetes heart attack and stroke. This February, the Southeast Michigan Diabetes Outreach Network (SEMDON) is encouraging African Americans to recognize American Heart Month by learning more about diabetes and heart disease.

Despite their increased risk, African Americans can prevent or delay Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease by making these healthy lifestyle changes: * Reach and stay at a healthy weight.
