Summary
Kym Worthy: This year in Taylor, Worthy's office attracted media attention after two young African American students, Devin Plummer and Franklin Smith, were charged with the murder of a White woman. The two were finally acquitted of all the charges as evidence showed they did not commit the crime. Community outrage sparked protests at Worthy's downtown offices in the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice. The county's top law enforcement officer's vigorous prosecution of mortgage fraud cases as well as killings and other heinous crimes in the county received a lot of media coverage.
Mary Beth Kelly: The former embattled chief judge of Wayne County resigned from her position. She's been accused of trying to privatize the Friend of the Court system. Perhaps Kelly's most notable battle, widely covered in the alternative media, especially the Black press in Detroit, has been the judicial tug of war between her and Wayne County Judge Deborah Thomas. Thomas led a crusade for the court to correct a system that systematically excluded Blacks from juries. That fight and restricting the rights of other judges to issue habeas corpus got Kelly in trouble after other judges on the bench joined Thomas' crusade. The county's top law enforcement officer's vigorous prosecution of mortgage fraud cases as well as killings and other heinous crimes in the county received a lot of media coverage.See the full content of this document
